So what is this Project, and why does it deserve your attention?
This Project is part of my Game Design course, under the Group Project Module in my third year. The purpose of the module is to focus on a project and release a full short serious game.
A serious game, according to NASA can be as follows:
And that is exactly what we will be doing in this project.
We will work with a charity to develop a serious game for their website, which means developing for WEBGL. We will use Unity and other tools to achieve this, collaborating through Github.
Our main goal is to create a game that anyone can pick up and play, and learn something. We are not focusing on gamers as that is not the target audience, It's a serious game after all, and its purpose is to educate. That said we will still make sure the game is fun, so that way the game is engaging.
So who is we? This is a group project after all!
We are Team Gekkos, 5 Lads who all, but me, do Asset Design!
As you can tell I'll be the Project Lead, which means managing deadlines and making sure everyone is working as efficiently as possible. but I'll also be heading the game design and helping in the programming, basically doing a bit of everything so that way I can elevate pressure if any of my teammates have more on their plates than others.
To communicate and get our team on the same path, I set up a Discord, for quick and easy communication, and a Trello, so that we could delegate tasks and keep track of progress when our project is in development.
In the Trello and the Discord, we have multiple channels in order to organise our work by category. This will allow our team to concentrate on one task at a time and not get boggled down in information overload.
But both of these solutions are useless if no work is delegated to the team members. Hence the roles stated above, but are subject to change as the Project develops.
After Doing the Simons Coummity Game assignment (first dev log) we got assigned a charity that we would be working with!
Depaul was going to be our charity, and the first step was to get in contact with them and set up a meeting. Our Lecturer Seamus gave us the contact email, and the rest is up to us.
So i sent the following email
Hi Sarah!
My name is Jamie, I am with the TUDublin Game Design course. I believe our lecturer Seamus has already contacted you about the project.
To summarise a team of us would love the opportunity to create a game for Depaul to make people aware of what you do.
We would love to have a meeting with you in the coming week to learn more about what Depaul does, What you want to communicate with the game, and who uses your website so that we can tailor the game to them.
We can focus the game on certain topics that you find under-represented, or on topics that are urgent and need some attention.
We will discuss this further in our meeting, we are looking forward to it! When would you be available to meet and where?
Kind Regards,
Jamie Clarke
And after that, we started an email thread that led us to have our first meeting with Sarah. There we learned about Depaul and what they want from our game. Essentially they want something that will teach the people who visit their website, what Depaul does, and how people's lives are affected. Initially, they wanted a story of someone's journey, but they liked our Idea of a resource management game, like the one for the Simons community, so we are heading in that direction, while also mixing in some real stories that show the impact the player will have.
So the Project was due on the 30th April 2024, which bluntly is not enough time to make a quality game that would be played by many people. Here are some images and the slides for what we presented. Two members from Depaul attended the presentation, so it was cool to get some feedback from them!
Well, the game is not finished, but we are off for the summer. So we will be taking a more straightforward casual approach to the development, focusing on the story and polishing of the game. As of May I've compiled all the services and income streams of Depaul, especially in Dublin, so the plan is to design how the player will unlock these income streams and services. After that polishing will begin.
Here is the current Miro Bard were i will be taking notes and planning for the project.
